The magic of data

The data sets more and more scientists are now working with are not only extremely extensive, but also present their research subjects in a very abstract way. For outsiders, these numerical series are difficult to understand, so the fascination that can emanate from data is often only accessible to those who conduct research with them.

HIDA has therefore tried to give a visual form to the complex topic of data science in order to turn it into a sensual experience. The goal: to create an access to modern data-driven research via images.

Data in a new look

At the re:publica Campus 2020 in Berlin from September 6 to October 4, 2020 HIDA presents artistic animations and visualizations created by Cologne-based designer Michael Schmitz and based on real data sets. Doctoral researchers from the six Helmholtz Data Science Schools use them to conduct research on topics related to energy, earth and environment, health, key technologies, structure of matter as well as aviation, space travel and transport.
