Interdisciplinary Research
Evaluating huge amounts of data requires intelligent algorithms and methodologically skilled experts. That is why the Helmholtz Association trains young scientists at the interface between Information & Data Science and a scientific domain at six research schools. At these schools, doctoral researchers deepen their expertise in data science methods and learn to combine knowledge from the six Helmholtz research fields - Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Aeronautics, Space and Transport, Matter and Information - with data science.
Innovative Y-Supervision
The Schools are characterized by an innovative supervision concept: At all Helmholtz Information & Data Science Schools, PhD researchers are guided by two experts each - one person from the field of computer science or mathematics, and one person from the natural science application field. In this way, the PhD researchers receive the best possible training in both areas - in the field of information & data science and in the research domain.
Networks between First-Class Research Institutions
Tandem supervision not only has advantages for the PhD researchers: it also brings the scientists of the Helmholtz Centres into contact with the researchers of the partner universities and ensures an extremely valuable exchange of experience and methods between them. By establishing numerous smart point-to-point connections throughout Germany, the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Schools thus span comprehensive networks between first-class research institutions and researchers and develop research-related competence nodes with international appeal.
