Fair and Data Management:

Metadata Management: From Key Essentials to Practice

Hands-on introduction to metadata management, combining FAIR principles, JSON Schema, and practical repository workflows.

This course is offered by HMC in cooperation with HIDA

HMC

The Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) promotes the qualitative enrichment of research data by means of metadata – and implements this approach across the whole organization.

HMC develops and implements novel concepts and technologies for a sustainable handling of research data through high-quality metadata. Its main goal is to make the depth and breadth of research data produced by Helmholtz Centres findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) for the whole science community.

This course provides a structured introduction to metadata management and connects conceptual foundations with practical implementation. Participants explore metadata principles, FAIR alignment, JSON Schema structures, and apply their knowledge using a real-world scientific use case. The course emphasizes tool-based workflows and repository interaction.

Learning goals

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • explain the importance and added value of metadata
  • navigate and interpret JSON Schema structures
  • create, edit, and manage metadata using a metadata management tool
  • search and retrieve data using structured metadata

Course date

Register now: 17 April 2026

Prerequisites

Participants must install the Metadata Editor in advance and create an account for the Datamanager UI (GitHub, ORCID, or Helmholtz AAI login required).

Target group

This course is open to researchers within the Helmholtz Association. It is particularly relevant for scientists working with complex measurement data, especially in the Research Field Matter.

This course is free of charge.
