The programs

Mit HIDA das HZI kennen lernen

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is part of the Helmholtz Association.

Data science talents can conduct research at the Center with the following programs.

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig researches the mechanisms of infectious diseases and their defense. The scientists study viruses and bacteria such as tuberculosis, AIDS and Covid-19 pathogens and analyze the human immune system. The aim is to develop new drugs, diagnostic procedures and vaccines and quickly put them into practice. The HZI relies on individualized medicine and artificial intelligence to specifically identify pathogens and develop tailored therapies.

Main research areas:

  • Infection Research
  • Drug Research
  • Individualized Infection Medicine
  • Pandemic Resilience
  • Infections and Climate Change
  • Information and Data Technology for Infection Research

The sites

The sites

The Helmholtz Center for Infection Research is active at several research sites:

  • HZI campus in Braunschweig (main site)
  • Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) in Saarbrücken
  • Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) in Würzburg
  • Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) in Greifswald
  • Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology (BRICS)
  • Centre for Individualized Infection Medicine (CiiM) in Hanover

HZI expertise in the field of data science and AI

The HZI uses data science methods and AI to better understand infection processes and develop new therapeutic approaches. Big data analyses and machine learning are used to identify patterns in disease progression and optimize treatment options.

The targeted use of AI-based prediction models can accelerate the development of new vaccines and drugs to combat infections efficiently.

  • AI-supported pathogen analysis and diagnostics
  • Simulation of disease progression
  • Automated evaluation of infection data
  • Development of personalized therapies through machine learning
  • Analysis of antibiotic resistance with AI

The HZI uses state-of-the-art methods to research the mechanisms of infectious diseases and develop innovative therapies. Through the use of AI and individualized medicine, the HZI contributes to the fight against global health threats.
