Title: Fostering Research Integrity in an AI-Driven World
Abstract:
With the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, artificial intelligence has become an integral part of everyday research. Studies show that a large proportion of researchers – in some cases over 70% – already use such tools, and usage among students is estimated at around 90%. However, clear guidelines for responsible use are often lacking.
Since 2023, research institutions, funding bodies, and publishers have been actively discussing how generative AI can be used in line with research integrity. While initial recommendations are available, key questions remain – such as how to ensure transparency in publications, how AI should be used in peer review or grant applications, and how to handle AI-generated images.
This lecture provides an overview of the current state of the debate, presents existing frameworks, and highlights ethical, technical, and practical challenges. It aims to offer orientation and raise awareness of critical aspects in the use of AI in research.
