The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is South Korea’s leading national research institute for information and communication technologies. Since its establishment in 1976, ETRI has played a decisive role in Korea’s transformation into a global high-tech nation – contributing breakthroughs such as CDMA, 5G mobile communication, and cutting-edge artificial intelligence systems.
The South Korea Mobility Program offers data science talents the opportunity to spend up to three months at ETRI in Daejeon. Participants join a high-tech environment focused on future-oriented fields such as quantum computing, 6G networks, cybersecurity, and AI-based systems. With access to advanced laboratories and close collaboration with industry and universities, they can work on projects that are both application-driven and globally relevant.

About NORA
National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST)
The National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) currently brings together 23 leading research institutes active in a wide range of fields – from materials science, biotechnology, and energy to space exploration, robotics, and information and communication technologies. It coordinates their strategic direction, fosters synergies among the institutes, and supports the government in shaping research and innovation strategies. In doing so, NST plays a key role in advancing scientific excellence in areas of societal relevance and in transferring technological innovations to industry and society. In addition, it strengthens the international networks of Korean research and enables joint projects with leading research organizations worldwide.
Founded in 1976, ETRI was originally established to build and modernize Korea’s telecommunications infrastructure. Today, it ranks among the world’s leading research institutes in information and communication technologies. Beyond its pioneering role in the development of standards such as CDMA and 5G, ETRI is driving forward future technologies including 6G, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Research at ETRI spans the entire digital technology spectrum: from fundamental studies and algorithm design to system integration and pilot projects with industrial partners. A distinctive feature of ETRI’s approach is its strong emphasis on application-oriented research, covering areas from chip and hardware design to large-scale communication infrastructures and software platforms for smart cities. ETRI also plays an active role in international research collaboration. It contributes to global standardization efforts, partners with leading universities and companies, and applies its research to accelerate digital transformation in key domains such as healthcare, mobility, energy, and public administration.
Research priorities:
ETRI’s work focuses on advancing and applying next-generation ICT solutions. Its key priorities include:
-
Next-generation communication networks – research on 6G, quantum communication, and satellite-based systems.
-
Artificial intelligence and big data – development of algorithms, platforms, and applications for healthcare, mobility, and smart cities.
-
Microelectronics and semiconductor technologies – design and integration of chips and hardware for high-performance computing and communication systems.
-
Information security and cyber resilience – technologies to safeguard critical infrastructures and counter digital threats.
-
Human-technology interaction – intelligent systems that seamlessly integrate digital technologies into everyday life.
