Our Partner in South Korea:

Korea Basic Science Institute

As South Korea’s national center for basic science, KBSI specializes in developing and applying state-of-the-art scientific methods. With its unique infrastructure and expertise, the institute supports researchers in addressing fundamental scientific questions and translating discoveries into future technologies.

The South Korea Mobility Program offers data science talents the opportunity to undertake a research stay of up to three months at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI).

KBSI provides access to advanced research equipment, specialized laboratories, and an interdisciplinary environment where young scientists can contribute to pioneering projects.

About NST

National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST)

The National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) currently brings together 23 leading research institutes active in a wide range of fields – from materials science, biotechnology, and energy to space exploration, robotics, and information and communication technologies. It coordinates their strategic direction, fosters synergies among the institutes, and supports the government in shaping research and innovation strategies. In doing so, NST plays a key role in advancing scientific excellence in areas of societal relevance and in transferring technological innovations to industry and society. In addition, it strengthens the international networks of Korean research and enables joint projects with leading research organizations worldwide.

The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), founded in 1988 under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is a national research institute dedicated to advancing basic science. Its mission is to develop and operate cutting-edge scientific instruments and to provide research infrastructure for universities, research organizations, and industry partners in Korea and abroad.

KBSI plays a central role in the country’s basic science ecosystem by offering large-scale facilities and advanced analysis platforms. Through this, it enables scientific discoveries that are essential for advancing knowledge and technological innovation.

Research priorities:

KBSI’s research activities span a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, with a strong emphasis on:

  • Analytical sciences and large-scale instruments – development and utilization of advanced facilities such as NMR, mass spectrometry, and synchrotron radiation.
  • Materials science and nanotechnology – investigation and design of new materials at the atomic and molecular levels.
  • Life and environmental sciences – providing infrastructure and analytics for research into biological systems, environmental change, and sustainable solutions.
  • Interdisciplinary basic science – fostering new research fields by linking physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering.

How to Apply
