Our Partner in South Korea:

Korea Railroad Research Institute

The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) is Korea’s national research institute dedicated to railway technology and future mobility systems. Since its establishment in 1996, KRRI has developed innovative solutions for high-speed trains, urban transit, intelligent rail infrastructure, and sustainable logistics.

The South Korea Mobility Program offers data science talents the opportunity to spend up to three months at KRRI in Uiwang. Participants engage in an interdisciplinary environment combining engineering, transportation research, and data-driven simulations. They benefit from access to test tracks, simulation platforms, and laboratories for rolling stock, signaling, and infrastructure development.

About NST

National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST)

The National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) currently brings together 23 leading research institutes active in a wide range of fields – from materials science, biotechnology, and energy to space exploration, robotics, and information and communication technologies. It coordinates their strategic direction, fosters synergies among the institutes, and supports the government in shaping research and innovation strategies.

In doing so, NST plays a key role in advancing scientific excellence in areas of societal relevance and in transferring technological innovations to industry and society. In addition, it strengthens the international networks of Korean research and enables joint projects with leading research organizations worldwide.

KRRI conducts research across the entire rail value chain: from advanced propulsion systems and smart control technologies to innovative materials for vehicles and infrastructure. A strong emphasis is placed on sustainable mobility, reinforcing the role of rail as the backbone of environmentally friendly transport systems.

The institute also plays an active role in international cooperation and standardization. Together with global partners, KRRI develops technologies for ultra-high-speed rail, green rail systems, and integrated urban mobility solutions, shaping both Korea’s transport infrastructure and global rail markets.

Research priorities

  • High-speed and ultra-high-speed rail – development of technologies for speeds beyond 400 km/h, including magnetic levitation systems.

  • Intelligent rail systems – application of AI, big data, and IoT for signaling, operations management, and predictive maintenance.

  • Sustainable mobility – energy-efficient propulsion, electrification, and hydrogen- or hybrid-based technologies.

  • Infrastructure and materials – innovative construction and maintenance methods for tracks, tunnels, and bridges.

  • Urban and integrated transport systems – development of multimodal solutions for metropolitan areas, including metro and light rail.
