Do you want to learn how to teach data science skills to others and become a certified instructor? Then apply for a HIDA-sponsored seat at an instructor training provided by the non-profit organisation The Carpentries.
As a Platinum Member of The Carpentries, HIDA sponsors 15 spots each year in the Instructor Training program for Helmholtz researchers who wish to become certified Data Science instructors. The goal is to build a network of qualified educators within the Helmholtz Association who deliver high-quality courses for researchers at all career stages.
About the Instructor Training
The Carpentries Instructor Training is an intensive, evidence-based professional development program that equips researchers with the teaching skills necessary to deliver high-quality, hands-on data science workshops. Rather than teaching technical content, the training aims to foster excellence in teaching to guide learners through foundational topics such as R, Python, Git, and more.
Key components of the program include:
- Using evidence-based teaching approaches for effective support of learners
- Building inclusive and welcoming classroom environments
- Live coding as a method of instruction
- Co-teaching and using shared, open-source lesson materials
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in practical teaching exercises and receive feedback to develop their teaching proficiency.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for one of the HIDA-sponsored training seats, you have to:
- work at one of the Helmholtz Centers
- Bring practical experience with at least one of the following tools or programming languages: R, Python, Unix Shell, Git, SQL, or MATLAB. The training focuses exclusively on teaching methods – it does not cover the technical or conceptual fundamentals of these tools.
- be willing to co-teach at least two HIDA-organized Data Science courses after completing the training. These courses typically take place over two half-days and follow The Carpentries curriculum. They are usually delivered in teams of one to two instructors. You can find more information about HIDA’s courses here!
Benefits of Participation
Successful completion of the training will enable participants to:
- Join an international community of certified Carpentries instructors
- Apply evidence-based teaching practices in diverse educational settings
- Build the career asset of having formal teaching education and practice
- Contribute actively to the training initiatives coordinated by HIDA
This is your opportunity to both grow professionally and make a meaningful impact in your scientific community.
