KRIBB is South Korea’s leading national institute dedicated to life sciences and biotechnology, advancing research that addresses pressing challenges in health, agriculture, and the environment. Through cutting-edge biological research and translational innovation, KRIBB seeks to improve human well-being and contribute to sustainable development.
The South Korea Mobility Program provides data science talents with the opportunity to undertake a research stay of up to three months at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB). Participants join an interdisciplinary setting where biology, medicine, and data-driven technologies intersect to accelerate discovery and innovation.

About NST
National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST)
The National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) currently brings together 23 leading research institutes active in a wide range of fields – from materials science, biotechnology, and energy to space exploration, robotics, and information and communication technologies. It coordinates their strategic direction, fosters synergies among the institutes, and supports the government in shaping research and innovation strategies.
In doing so, NST plays a key role in advancing scientific excellence in areas of societal relevance and in transferring technological innovations to industry and society. In addition, it strengthens the international networks of Korean research and enables joint projects with leading research organizations worldwide.
The Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) was founded in 1985 as a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT. It serves as Korea’s central national institute for life sciences and biotechnology. KRIBB’s mission covers both fundamental research in the life sciences and the development of new biotechnological processes with applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental protection.
In addition to conducting its own cutting-edge research, KRIBB provides national research infrastructure ranging from advanced genomics and bioinformatics platforms to specialized laboratories for cell biology and microbiome studies. This allows the institute not only to strengthen Korea’s scientific community but also to give international partners access to state-of-the-art technologies. Over the years, KRIBB has become a key institution for biotechnology in Asia. It works closely with universities, hospitals, companies, and international research organizations to accelerate the transfer of scientific discoveries into practical applications.
Through this close integration of basic science and applied development, KRIBB plays a vital role in enabling new medical therapies, securing sustainable food production, and promoting environmentally friendly biotechnological solutions.
Research priorities:
KRIBB’s activities are focused on creating solutions to real-world problems through life science research.
Key areas include:
- Human health and medicine – genomics, bioinformatics, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine to tackle diseases and improve healthcare.
- Agricultural biotechnology – crop improvement, microbiome research, and bio-based solutions for sustainable food systems.
- Environmental biotechnology – bioremediation, bioenergy, and microbial solutions for environmental protection.
- Synthetic biology and convergence technologies – developing next-generation biotechnologies by integrating biology with engineering, chemistry, and data science.
How to Apply
